Title: Overview of Machine Learning application in Bioinformatics
Abstract: The success of whole-genome sequencing project has led to
vast amount of genomic data being generated day-by-day. Substantial
important genes have been identified thanks to that. Although there
exist complex processes from gene identification to gene/protein
function prediction, the data-rich era has opened a new phase in
molecular biology, hoping to accelerate new discovery in the domain.
The first half of this talk will walk the audiences through the
fundamentals of molecular biology, the big picture of a biological
system, and general subfields that utilise Machine learning. The
second half is about learning structure of cellular networks,
demonstrated by gene regulatory network reconstruction with Bayesian
Networks. Meanwhile, challenges for Machine Learning application in
bioinformatics will also be mentioned.
